Eligibility Requirements
Priority is given to families who commit to the program through the 5th grade. Students must meet the following criteria:
- Spanish speakers entering kindergarten
- Texas residents
- 5 years old on or before September 1, 2025
Families also must:
- Attend a Dual Language Orientation
- Partner with teachers to support Spanish-rich learning at home
- Commit to the long-term goal of bilingualism
What is the One-Way Dual Language Program?
The One-Way Dual Language Program at LSOA is a Spanish/English immersion model created for native Spanish-speaking kindergarten students who are Texas residents. They begin with 90% of instruction in Spanish and 10% in English, gradually becoming bilingual and biliterate over time.
I also want my child to learn English—will they?
Yes, our One-Way Dual Language Program helps native Spanish speakers become fluent in English while continuing to build on their Spanish skills. Students begin with the majority of instruction in Spanish and gradually receive more English instruction over time, ensuring a strong foundation in both languages.
Why should I enroll my child in a dual language program?
This program builds on the strengths your child already has as a native Spanish speaker. Rather than replacing Spanish with English, the dual language model helps your child maintain their native language, develop pride in their heritage, and gain strong English skills—all of which support long-term academic and personal success.
How will I know if my child is learning English?
You’ll see progress through regular communication with your child’s teacher, report cards, and English language development assessments. Teachers track growth in both languages and share updates with families. You’ll also notice your child using English more confidently in everyday conversations over time.
Can families who don’t speak Spanish enroll?
No. This program is specifically for native Spanish-speaking children. Families must confirm language eligibility during the enrollment process.
